Overview of our Fes to Merzouga desert tour 2 days

Our Fes to Merzouga desert tour 2 days is a private tour with local drivers who know the roads well. We are Bahma tour a tour operator based in Merzouga with 12 years running Sahara tours. This is a 2-day round trip from Fes that takes you across the Middle Atlas Mountains to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi and back. No long-haul flights or trains, just one continuous overland journey to the Sahara and back home again. It’s built for travellers who have two days to kill between Fes hotels or flights and want a real desert night without sacrificing a week of their trip. You’ll have a night in a Berber camp, ride a camel into the dunes at sunset and be back in Fes by the following evening.

Why choose Our 8 Moroccan trip

This is an itinerary for efficiency, not for slow sightseeing. It’s a round trip, not a one-way transfer, so you will be driving some of the same road on the way back, but at least you don’t have to arrange a second pick-up or a flight from another city. Two days will get you to authentic Saharan dunes and a night there but means real driving time on both days (6-7 hours each way) with few stops. If you’d prefer to split up the driving with an extra overnight in the Dades or Todra Gorges, 3-day Fes to Merzouga tour takes the same route over three days at a more relaxed pace. This 2-day version is great if you’re travelling on a budget and don’t want to miss the desert entirely.

Highlights

Our Itinerary

Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

Morning:
We meet between 07:30 and 08:00 at your riad or hotel in Fes. This is where the early start is important, the whole crossing is in daylight and you have time to get to the dunes before sunset. In the first hour you will climb into the Middle Atlas and drive through Ifrane, a town built in the European alpine style with steep-roofed stone houses, often called “Little Switzerland”. Tip: Pack a light jacket for this leg – Ifrane is over 1,600m and mornings are cool even in summer.

Noon:
Midday you will stop in the cedar forests around Azrou where wild Barbary macaques often come up to the road looking for food. From there the route heads south to Midelt, a mid-point town where most tours stop for lunch (own expense) before the scenery changes from forest to arid plateau. Tip: pack some small snacks with your almonds or fruit for the monkeys but never feed them bread or processed food, it makes them dependent on tourists and aggressive.

Afternoon/Evening:
Past Midelt the road climbs down into the Ziz Valley and Ziz Gorges, a canyon of date palm oases that marks the transition to pre-Saharan Morocco. Arrive by vehicle by late afternoon at your desert camp on the edge of Erg Chebbi where you can check in and drop off your luggage. From here you will ride on camel into the dunes to watch the sunset before returning to camp for the evening. Dinner is a traditional Moroccan meal in the camp, followed by live Gnawa-style drumming around the fire before sleeping in a private Berber tent.

Tip: Desert nights can be cold, even in summer, so pack a warm layer, socks and a beanie.

Day 2: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Azrou/Ifrane → Fès

Good Morning:
Optional early wake-up to walk out and catch sunrise over the dunes – the best light of the whole trip and worth the early alarm. After breakfast at the camp, your vehicle will pick you up directly from the camp and you will start the drive north, driving back along the Ziz Valley road.
Tip: Even if you miss the sunrise walk, the dunes immediately around the camp are worth a short walk in the early morning light.

Noon:
Lunch stop in Midelt (own expense), approximately halfway on the return route. This is usually the last flexible stop before the drive begins its steady push back towards Fes.
Tip: Midelt is famous for its apple orchards and dried fruit stalls – a good place to pick up snacks for the road.

Afternoon/Evening:
The route retraces its steps through the cedar forest and Ifrane of Azrou, before descending from the Middle Atlas towards Fes. Your return to your riad or hotel usually takes place in the early to late evening depending on traffic and how long you stopped earlier in the day.
Tip: If you are flying out of Fes in the evening, give yourself a cushion of at least 2 hours – the exact time of return will depend on the season and stops made.
